Timeless Kitchen Design

Graham Robinson, our Head of Design, gives KBB magazine his advice on how to create a kitchen design that is timeless and stylish, and will be loved by their owners for years to come.

Here are Graham’s top 5 tips for timeless design:

1. Keep it Personal

Make decisions based on styles and colours that resonate with you. Borrow samples of doors and colours you’re drawn to, and live with them for a while. If they make you feel comfortable and happy after a week or so, you probably won’t tire of them.

2. Don’t Compare

It’s really easy to get drawn into the instagram or Pinterest rabbit hole, and then trying to completely recreate a look you’ve seen online. If you work with an experienced designer who can draw out your style and lifestyle needs, you will see your own unique scheme develop.

3. Stay classic

Similar to curating a high-quality capsule wardrobe, it makes sense to choose classic colours and natural finishes that won’t date your home to a trend - remember the avocado bathroom suites of the 70s! For example, I have recommended a warm anthracite grey shade, instead of a navy blue kitchen, as it will stand the test of time.

4. Practicality comes first!

Having a kitchen that works exactly as you need it will make your life easier and ensure you’re happier with your kitchen for longer. The most common reasons clients that come to us have for changing their kitchen is that the layout and scheme is annoying them!

5. Quality is key

A high quality kitchen brand will show its true colours from day one. Cabinetry will wear well, and it will look as pristine as the day it ws fitted, even with heavy use. The same applies for appliances, buy the highest quality for the ones you can see yourself using every day. A good choice now is better than having to replace in a few years.

And finally, bear in mind that most trends are short-lived but good quality will last decades, and transcend fashion. Think Vivienne Westwood vs. Zara!
